AKRON, Ohio – Lake Erie fell to Akron in exhibition action on Saturday. After a solid start to the game for the visiting Storm, the Zips pulled away late in the first half and shot a red-hot 51.7 percent (31-of-60) in defeating LEC, 97-48.
The Storm was a minus-14 in turnover margin (26-12) and a minus-13 in rebounding margin in the preseason tilt at James A. Rhodes Arena. Getting to the free-throw line 40 times to LEC's six, Akron outscored the Storm, 41-19, in the first half and 56-29 in the second.
Chrissy Delaney ignited a solid early stretch for the visiting five, scoring multiple buckets as the Storm opened a 9-8 lead over the first six minutes of play. The senior forward would finish the game with nine points.
Akron got hot from the field, overpowering Lake Erie to the tune of a 19-3 run over the next 10 minutes. The Zips would go into halftime up by 22.
UA extended its lead to 40 by the 13-minute mark in the second half. The Zips got to the line 29 times in the second, and their ability to get to the stripe with physical play inside loomed large in the eventual 49-point margin of victory.
Akron was led offensively by Hanna Luburgh, who scored 22 points. More than half of those came on 3-pointers; Luburgh went 4-of-8 from beyond the arc.
Lake Erie was paced by freshman guard Alyssa Brumbaugh, who tallied 12 points on a 4-of-5 shooting afternoon. Brumbaugh was 3-of-4 on a quartet of 3-point attempts. Junior guard Jackie Murray had five points and five rebounds. Freshman center Kennedy Walker added eight points.
