YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Lake Erie College women's basketball team was defeated today by Division-I Youngstown St., 89-61. With the loss the Storm falls to 4-5 overall and with the win the Penguins improve to 9-1 overall.
After the Penguins started the game on a 5-0 run the Storm responded with a 5-0 run of their own to tie the game. The run was highlighted by a Sami Narducci (North Royalton, Ohio / North Royalton) three pointer. Both teams fought for the remainder of the quarter, and the Storm entered the second quarter trailing 20-16.
The Penguins opened the second quarter on a 7-1 run that was halted by the Storm when Kallie Allen (Fowlerville, Mich. / Fowlerville) connected from behind the arc, to make the score 27-20 in favor of Youngstown St. The Penguins went a big run to end the half and Lake Erie trailed 49-25 at the intermission. At the half the Storm was led by Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) who had seven points and four rebounds.
The Storm opened the scoring in the third quarter when Gabor hit a jump shot. The third quarter was a back and forth battle in which the Storm was unable to cut into the lead. Lake Erie entered the fourth quarter trailing 70-42.
Both teams continued to battle in the fourth quarter and the Storm matched the Penguins with both teams scoring 19 points in the quarter. The Penguins held on to win the game, 89-61.
The Storm was led by Gabor as she had a team high 14 points and six rebounds. Shelby Carpenter (New Lebanon, Ohio / Miami Valley) led the way for the defense with five steals, and also added in 10 points. Victoria Burdo (Waterville, Ohio / Anthony Wayne) pitched in with a career best eight points, on 3-6 shooting from the field.
Lake Erie will be back in action Saturday (December 19th) when they host Saginaw Valley St. at 1 P.M.
