DETROIT, Mich. - The Lake Erie College women's basketball team was defeated today by Wayne St., 77-70.
The Storm came out of the gate ready to battle as Carlye Garst (Salem, Va. / Salem) forced a Warriors turnover on their first possession, which led to a Shelby Carpenter (New Lebanon, Ohio / Miami Valley) three pointer to put the Storm up 3-0. The Storm continued to play well, and led 12-10 at the media timeout. Both teams traded baskets for the remainder of the quarter, as the game was tied three separate times, and the Storm entered the second quarter with a 19-16 advantage.
The second quarter started as a battle in which the Warriors tied the game at 23 points apiece. The Storm responded with a 9-0 run in which Carpenter, Sami Narducci (North Royalton, Ohio / North Royalton), and Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) each hit from behind the arc to open a 32-23 advantage. The Storm entered the intermission leading the Warriors, 33-30. At the half the Storm was led by Carpenter as she had 13 points, on 3-4 shooting from behind the arc.
The Warriors started the third quarter on a 10-0 run, and took a 40-33 advantage. The run was ended by a Carpenter three that was assisted by Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor). The Storm responded and cut the Warriors lead to 42-40 with a little more than five minutes remaining in the quarter. The Storm tied the game at 50 points apiece when Dawson made a layup and hit the foul shot to convert the three point play. The Warriors took a 54-50 lead into the fourth quarter.
After the Warriors gained a five point edge the Storm scored five unanswered points to tie the game with Carpenter making the game tying layup. The Warriors answered with a 7-0 run, before Dawson made a layup off of an assist by Kaeding Skelton (Grand Haven, Mich. / Grand Haven), to make the score, 64-59. The Warriors managed to hold off the Storm, and won the game 77-70.
The Storm was led by Carpenter as she had a career high 24 points, five steals, and three rebounds. Gabor added 21 points, four rebounds, and two steals. Brianna Shagovac (Lorain, Ohio / Amherst Steele) gave the Storm a spark off of the bench as she had seven points, three assists, and two steals.
Lake Erie will be back in action Saturday (January 23rd) when they travel to take on Findlay at 1 P.M.
