ROCHESTER, NY.-The Lake Erie College women's basketball team took on the Pumas of Saint Joseph College in the first round of the Redhawk Alumni Classic at Roberts Wesleyan College on Friday (Nov. 18) night.
Lake Erie improved to 2-1 on the season with a 65-59 win over the Pumas.
In the first quarter of the game, neither team was able to pull far away as the teams tied four times in the first seven minutes of the game. Brianna Shagovac (Lorain, Ohio / Amherst Steele) scored five of the final seven points for the Storm in the last two minutes of the first period, giving the Storm a 15-12 lead after one.
Saint Joseph regained an 18-17 lead with a 6-2 run to begin the second quarter. Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) started a 7-0 run with a three pointer. The Storm opened a six point lead with 4:11 left in the first half. The Pumas tied the game with a 6-0 response run, tying the game on a three pointer from Brittany Morris. Lake Erie led 28-27 at halftime.
Both teams shot 35% in the first half as Josie Chaddock (Minerva, Ohio / Minerva) led the Storm with eight points in the first half.
Lake Erie made six of their first eight shots of the third quarter as they opened a 14 point lead with a 14-1 run. Kalea Parks singlehandedly cut the lead to nine with a 5-0 run for the Pumas. Victoria Burdo (Waterville, Ohio / Anthony Wayne) scored five points as the Storm pushed the lead to a game-high 16 with a 9-2 run. Lake Erie led 51-35 with 1:49 left in the third quarter. A 7-0 Saint Joseph run ended the third quarter, slimming the Storm's lead to 51-42.
Lake Erie tried to keep the lead in double-digits in the fourth quarter but the Pumas kept fighting. With 3:05 left in the game, a split pair of Puma free throws cut the lead to six points. Lake Erie's defense held up as they held on to a 65-59 win over the Pumas.
Lake Erie shot 38% (24-63) in the game compared to Saint Joseph shooting 36% (22-60).
Chaddock and Gabor led the Storm with 14 points each. Gabor ended with a double-double as she pulled down 11 rebounds as well. Shagovac finished with 11 points as she had double-digit points for the third straight game.
The Storm will take on the host, Roberts Wesleyan at 3:00 PM Saturday (Nov. 19).
