ROCHESTER, NY- The Lake Erie College women's basketball team wrapped up a weekend in New York at the Redhawk Alumni Classic at Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday (Nov. 19).
Despite two players with 22 points each, Lake Erie's offense went cold in the fourth quarter as the host Redhawks defeated the Storm 78-69.
Both teams were cold on offense as they combined to miss their first nine shots. Lake Erie got on the board first on a layup by Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor). The Redhawks rallied back with a 9-2 run, opening a five point lead at the halfway point of the quarter. With three minutes to go, Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) converted a three point play, cutting the lead to two. The Redhawks opened the lead back to seven late in the frame. Roberts Wesleyan led 19-14 after one quarter.
The Redhawks pushed the lead to eight in the early stages of the second quarter before Dawson went on a 9-5 run by herself. Dawson scored nine points herself to bring the lead from seven at the time to two at 31-29. After a three pointer from Gabor, Lake Erie took the lead on a pair of free throws by Dawson with 1:40 left in the half. The Redhawks and Storm tied 36-36 at halftime.
Dawson scored 19 points in the first half for the Storm as the Storm shot 42% (13-31). Roberts Wesleyan had a 45% shooting percentage in the first half (13-39).
Gabor scored the first 14 points for the Storm in the second half as she went on a 14-4 run by herself, opening a ten point lead with 2:56 left in the third. Roberts Wesleyan answered with a 12-4 run to end the third, closing the gap to two after 30 minutes, 56-54. Gabor closed the third quarter with 17 points alone in the frame.
Roberts Wesleyan took the lead on a three pointer early but the Storm used four free throws to regain the 61-57 lead. The Storm's offense went cold as they shot 17% (3-17) in the final quarter. The Redhawks outscored the Storm 21-8 over the final seven minutes.
Dawson finished with a career-high 22 points as a part of a double-double. Dawson grabbed ten rebounds and had four blocks as well. Gabor scored 22 points for the second time this season. Both were named to the All-Classic Team after the game. Daija Jones (Cleveland, Ohio / St. Joseph) added 11 points.
Lake Erie will return home to host future GMAC foe, Ursuline College on Tuesday (Nov. 22).
