PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College women's basketball team got big performances from two of their starters but the Storm was downed by an even bigger performance on Ursuline's end.
The Ursuline College Arrows defeated the Lake Erie College Storm 89-71 despite the stellar efforts of Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) and Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor). Lake Erie is now 2-3 for the year with their second straight loss.
Ursuline took an early 3-0 lead before the Storm went on a 10-0 run. Gabor scored seven of the ten points on the run for Lake Erie, who had a 10-3 lead. The Arrows ended the last 5:13 of the quarter on an 11-4 run as the game was tied at 14 all after one quarter. Gabor and Dawson ended with 12 of the 14 points combined for the Storm.
After a 16-16 tie in the second quarter, back-to-back Ursuline three pointers gave the Arrows a 22-16 lead with 8:02 left in the half. Two more threes for Ursuline jumped the lead to 11 with 4:55 left. The Storm cut the lead to seven but the Arrows led by nine, 37-28 at the intermission.
Ursuline shot 45% (13-29) in the first half, compared to Lake Erie's 27% (11-41) shooting percentage. Gabor led the Storm with 14 points while Dawson added 11 in the first half.
A three pointer by Jordan Joseph (Solon, Ohio / Solon) pulled the Storm within six at the 7:50 mark. A 22-11 run by the Arrows put the visitors up 17 in the closing minutes of the third quarter. Ursuline led 66-50 after three periods.
Gabor scored the Storm's first six points of the fourth quarter as Lake Erie narrowed the lead to 11 on a Dawson layup. Ursuline pulled away as the Storm got closer in the final minutes. The Arrows defeated the Storm 89-71.
For the Arrows, preseason GMAC Player of the Year Laney Lewis finished just shy of a triple-double. She finished with 24 points, 21 rebounds, six blocks, and eight assists. Ursuline shot 54% for the game, making 32-of-59 shots. The Arrows hit 16 threes.
Gabor led the Storm with 27 points, tying her career-high total. She also grabbed nine boards, finishing short of a double-double. Dawson set a new career-high with 23 points on ten-of-18 shooting. Dawson pulled down eight rebounds in the game.
Daija Jones (Cleveland, Ohio / St. Joseph Academy) added six points and eight rebounds for Lake Erie.
The Storm shot 49% (17-35) in the second half, raising the final shooting percentage to 37% (28-76) for the game.
Lake Erie will return to action on Sunday (Nov. 27) as they will travel to downtown Cleveland for an exhibition matchup with the Cleveland State Vikings.
