Huskies Use 2nd Half Run to Down Storm, 71-54

PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College women's basketball team hosted the Michigan Tech Huskies on Thursday (Dec. 8) for the first home game of the GLIAC schedule.

The Huskies used a late second half run to defeat the Storm 71-54, dropping the Storm to 2-6 overall and 0-3 in the GLIAC.

After Michigan Tech opened the game with a basket, Lake Erie went on a 5-0 run with Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) scoring four points. The Storm opened a 10-4 lead with 3:18 left in the quarter before the Huskies closed the quarter with a 9-1 run. Michigan Tech led 13-11 after one quarter.

Michigan Tech pushed the lead to five off of a three pointer at the start of the second quarter. Gabor scored the next four points, closing the gap to one at 16-15. A 7-0 Huskies run put the visitors up eight with 5:14 left in the half. The Storm went on a 7-0 run over the next three minutes as Michigan Tech only led by one. Gabor and Christine Dawson combined for the run. Sophie Sonneman (Jamestown, Ohio / Greeneview) closed out the half with three points as the Storm and Huskies were tied 25 all.

Lake Erie was led by Gabor, who had 12 points at the half.

The Storm and the Huskies battled back and forth over the first seven minutes of the second half. Gabor scored the first three points of the half before Michigan Tech answered with two straight threes. The teams tied two more times in the third quarter before Michigan Tech ended the quarter on a 9-2 run. The Storm trailed 48-41 after three quarters.

With 7:46 left in the game, Brianna Shagovac (Lorain, Ohio / Amherst Steele) converted a three point play. The layup and free throw cut the Huskies' lead to four at 50-46. A 13-3 run by the Huskies put the game out of reach in the closing minutes as the Storm fell 71-54.

Lake Erie shot 34% in the game, making 18-of-52 shots from the floor. The Storm was 74% from the charity stripe.

Dawson led the way with 18 points, including making eight-of-eight free throws. Gabor scored 17 points and grabbed 17 rebounds.

The Storm will host Northern Michigan on Saturday (Dec. 10) with the game tipping at 1:00 PM.
