Storm Wins Second Straight in OT, 80-78

MIDLAND, Mich. - The Lake Erie College women's basketball overcame an early deficit and held on in overtime for the Storm's second straight GLIAC win on Saturday (Dec. 17). The Storm defeated the Northwood Timberwolves 80-78 in overtime. Lake Erie is now 4-7 overall and 2-4 in the GLIAC.

Northwood went on an 11-0 run to open the game. Four minutes into the game, Daija Jones (Cleveland, Ohio / St. Joseph Academy) got the Storm on the board with a layup. Jones' basket started a 13-2 run that tied the game. Victoria Burdo (Waterville, Ohio / Anthony Wayne) hit a three pointer that tied the game at 13-13. Farrah Benner (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) followed with a three of her own that gave the Storm a 16-13 lead. The Timberwolves ended the quarter on an 8-0 run that gave the home team a 21-16 lead after one quarter.

Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) opened the second quarter with five of the Storm's seven points as the Storm cut the Northwood lead to one. The Timberwolves expanded the lead to three before Burdo buried another three to tie the game at 28 all. With one minute remaining in the half, Josie Chaddock (Minerva, Ohio / Minerva) hit a jumper to regain the 32-30 Storm lead. Kallie Allen (Fowlerville, Mich. / Fowlerville) converted a three point play with 34 seconds left, pushing the lead to five. Lake Erie led 37-32 at halftime.

Gabor led the Storm with 13 points in the first half. Lake Erie made 15-of-31 shots in the first half for a 48% shooting percentage.

Lake Erie maintained the lead throughout the first seven minutes of the third quarter as Northwood could only cut the lead to two a few times. The Timberwolves tied the game with back-to-back layups with less than three minutes to go. In the final two and a half minutes, the teams exchanged baskets with two more ties. The teams were knotted at 49-49 after three quarters.

Within the first three minutes, the teams tied three times as neither team could build a lead. A layup and a free throw gave the Storm a 58-55 lead with 6:39 left. A Northwood 5-1 run gave the Timberwolves a 60-58 lead before Gabor drilled a three pointer, regaining the Storm lead. Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) made a layup for a five point Storm lead. Northwood used back-to-back threes on an 8-0 run, taking a 68-65 lead with 1:08 left. Chaddock tied the game with three seconds left in regulation with a layup. The game headed to overtime tied at 68.

With Northwood leading 72-70, Brianna Shagovac (Lorain, Ohio / Amherst Steele) scored the next five points for the Storm. Shagovac hit a three that gave Lake Erie a 75-74 lead with 2:45 left in overtime. Leading by two with 36 ticks left, Dawson put the game away with a three point play. Northwood got a three point play in the final seconds but the Storm's lead was enough. Lake Erie won on the road 80-78.

Gabor finished with a double-double, scoring 20 points and grabbing ten rebounds. Chaddock set a career-high with 16 points on eight-of-ten shooting. Burdo set a career-high for the second straight game as she added 14 points off of the bench.

The Storm shot 48% from the floor, including 41% from downtown.

Lake Erie will have a two week break before playing on New Year's Eve at Daeman College.
