Early Run Lifts Storm Over Oilers

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College women's basketball team was in action today as they were victorious over the University of Findlay, 74-69. 

Head Coach Bob Booher said "We took control early and maintained the intensity throughout the game".    

The Storm opened the game on an 8-0 run as they scored on their first three possessions of the game.  Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) Josie Chaddock (Minerva, Ohio / Minerva) and Sophie Sonnenman (Jamestown, Ohio / Greenview) each scored baskets during the run.  The Storm stayed hot and entered the media timeout ahead, 12-3.  The Oilers battled to keep the game within single digits, and the Storm led, 21-13 at the end of the first quarter.        

The second quarter started as a back and forth battle as they Storm maintained a comfortable 11 point advantage at the media timeout in the second quarter. The teams continued to battle and the Storm entered the intermission ahead, 39-27. 

At the half Lake Erie was led by Gabor as she had a team high 10 points and a pair of rebounds.  Chaddock added eight points and a steal in the half for the Storm.  The Storm shot a stellar 52.6 percent from the field.

The Oilers came out of the half and went on a quick 4-0 run to cut into the Storm lead.  The run was halted when Gabor hit a layup and gave Lake Erie a 44-34 advantage at the media timeout in the third quarter.  The Storm maintained a solid 10 point, 53-43 lead at the end of the third. 

After the fourth quarter started as a back and forth battle, the Storm opened up a 5-0 run to take a 63-50 advantage.  The run was highlighted by a Daija Jones (Cleveland, Ohio / St. Joseph Academy) three pointer.  Lake Erie closed out the game on the foul line as Jones, Chaddock, Gabor, Jordan Joseph (Solon, Ohio / Solon), Kallie Allen (Fowlerville, Mich. / Fowlerville), and Ashley West (Willoughby Hills, Ohio / Cornerstone Christian) all made foul shots in the final two minutes and the Storm won, 74-69. 

The Storm was led by Gabor as she had a team 19 points, four assists, and four rebounds.  Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) led the way with 13 rebounds for the Storm and added nine points.  Chaddock provided 14 points for the Storm and added a pair of steals.  Off the bench West tied a career high in rebounds with six, and Joseph set a career high in points with six.    

Coach Booher added "Chaddock gave us a third scoring option today, and Jones was grabbed key rebounds for us down the stretch. 

Lake Erie will return to the hardwood Thursday (Feb. 16) when they travel to take on Hillsdale with the game set to tip at 6 p.m.
