Lake Erie Drops Season Finale to Panthers

PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College women's basketball team concluded the 2016-17 season with the home finale against the Ohio Dominican Panthers on Senior Night. The Storm fell to the Panthers 94-72 on Thursday (Feb. 23).

Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) opened the game with a three pointers but Ohio Dominican answered with a 9-0 run over the next four minutes. Josie Chaddock (Minerva, Ohio / Minerva) ended the run with a layup. With 4:10 left in the first quarter, Gabor and Sophie Sonneman (Jamestown, Ohio / Greeneview) combined for four straight points as the Storm cut the lead to three at 12-9. The Panthers pushed the lead to seven before Gabor made a three pointer with 2:02 left in the quarter. Lake Erie trailed 21-12 after one quarter.

The Panthers began the second quarter with a basket before Daija Jones (Cleveland, Ohio / St. Joseph Academy) made three straight free throws. Lake Erie slimmed the lead down to five as Gabor and Farrah Benner (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) combined on a 9-4 run. Ohio Dominican extended the lead to 19 before Gabor scored four straight points. The Storm trailed 46-32 at halftime.

Ohio Dominican started the second half with a run that pushed the lead to twenty. Lake Erie bounced back with back-to-back baskets by Chaddock and Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) as they cut the lead to 16. With 4:45 left in the third, Kallie Allen (Fowlerville, Mich. / Fowlerville) scored six straight points for the Storm as the Storm trailed by 11 at 59-48. The Panthers ended the quarter on a run as they led 68-49 after three quarters.

Dawson started the quarter with a layup and Brianna Shagovac (Lorain, Ohio / Amherst Steele) scored seven straight points. After Shagovac's run, Brenda Johnson (Bellefontaine, Ohio / Bellefontaine) scored four straight points for the Storm. With 3:17 left, Shagovac, Jones and Gabor combined on an 8-4 spurt that slimmed the lead to 14. The Panthers went on to win 94-72.

Gabor led the Storm with 20 points in the game. Dawson led all players with 12 rebounds in the game.

The three seniors had good games. Shagovac scored all 12 of her points in the fourth quarter. Jones added nine points, two steals and six rebounds. Allen tied a career-high with six points and set a career-high with five rebounds.

The Storm finished the season with an 8-18 overall record and a 6-14 record in the GLIAC.
