PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College Storm women's basketball team opened the 2017-18 season with a matchup against the Tiffin University Dragons as a part of the G-MAC/GLIAC Challenge on Saturday (Nov. 11) night.
The Storm defeated the Dragons 78-60 in the season opener for both teams.
"The Storm got a lot of key contributions in this game that allowed us to win," said Storm head coach Bob Booher. "Barrett really gave the Storm a boost in the first half with her inside play. Dawson was huge in the third quarter as she pulled down a lot of boards and was able to make some big shots. Dawson along with Josie's big fourth quarter took the pressure off of Kayla to lead the offense. Chaddock took over in the fourth quarter and helped the Storm pull away and win this game."
Tiffin gained an early 3-2 lead two minutes into the game. The Storm got four straight points from a Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) three pointer and an Ashley West (Willoughby Hills, Ohio / Cornerstone Christian) free throw, as the Storm regained a 6-3 lead. With 3:47 left in the first quarter, Josie Chaddock (Minerva, Ohio / Minerva) hit a jumper that kickstarted a 7-0 Lake Erie run that spanned two minutes and pushed the Storm lead to 16-7. With under a minute to go, Lee Lee Barrett (Chattanooga, Tenn. / Ooltewah) converted her second layup of the quarter. Barrett's bucket gave the Storm a 19-10 lead as Lake Erie led 19-13 at the end of the first quarter.
After West converted a layup at the 8:47 mark in the second quarter, Tiffin responded with a 7-0 run that trimmed the lead to 23-22. One minute later, Gabor used a three pointer and a pair of free throws for a 5-0 run. Lake Erie expanded the lead to six, 30-24, with 3:53 left in the half. The Dragons slimmed the deficit to two twice in the final four minutes but Lake Erie led by four at the half after a Chaddock jumper. The Storm led 34-30 at halftime.
Tiffin opened the second half with a three pointer, pulling within one point. Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) was a huge part of a Lake Erie 8-0 run that opened a nine point advantage. Dawson had an offensive rebound and putback off of a Chaddock missed free throw. Dawson added four more points and a defensive rebound. With under five minutes left in the third, Dawson pulled down two offensive rebounds on a Storm possession and finished it with a three point play. Lake Erie had a 48-37 lead with 4:33 left in the third period. Gabor had five points on a Lake Erie 7-0 run in the final two minutes as the Storm led 60-45 going to the fourth.

Chaddock rallied with five straight points, including a steal and a layup, for a 21-point Storm lead. Lake Erie won the opener by a final score of 78-60.
Gabor led the Storm with 18 points in the opener, along with eight rebounds. Chaddock had 17 points, including nine in the fourth quarter. Chaddock also had three assists and three steals. Dawson added 16 points, with ten of them coming in the third period. Dawson led all players with 11 rebounds and seven on the offensive front.
