Storm Drops Redhawk Classic Finale

ROCHESTER, NY- Playing the second leg of a back-to-back at the Redhawk Alumni Classic, the Lake Erie College women's basketball team fell to the host Roberts Wesleyan College Redhawks 81-73 on Saturday (Nov. 18) afternoon.

"A successful weekend for us despite going 1-1," said Storm head coach Bob Booher. There were a lot of contributions from a number of players to build upon for the future. Gabor averaged 25 points and 8.5 rebounds for the weekend. West played strong defense on two very talented opponents and rebounded well. Dawson had two solid rebounding games and Sonneman stepped up and took advantage of her starting opportunities. I saw a lot of growth from the bench which will be critical moving forward."

Roberts Wesleyan opened the game with a 5-3 lead 45 seconds in. The Storm got back-to-back baskets from Ashley West (Willoughby Hills, Ohio / Cornerstone Christian) and Sophie Sonneman (Jamestown, Ohio / Greeneview), taking a 7-5 lead at the 7:22 mark. A 6-0 Redhawks run put the hosts up 11-7 with 4:29 left in the first quarter. Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) hit three consecutive three pointers over a three minute span, with the third tying the game at 16 apiece. Roberts Wesleyan led 18-16 after the first quarter.

Sonneman converted a layup that trimmed the lead to 20-19 less than one minute into the second quarter. The Redhawks pushed the advantage to four three different times but the Storm quickly responded. Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) hit two layups along with a Josie Chaddock (Minerva, Ohio / Minerva) jumper as Lake Erie pulled within two all three times. After Chaddock's jumper, Roberts Wesleyan went on a 7-2 run that pushed the advantage to seven with 2:09 left in the first half. Megyn Christensen (Swanton, Ohio / Swanton) knocked down a three pointer with 1:17 left in the half as the Storm trailed 34-30 at the intermission.

Gabor led the Storm with 13 points in the first half, including 12 in the opening contest.

The Redhawks opened the second half with a 17-8 run over the first five minutes, pushing the lead 51-38. Sonneman had six of the eight points for the Storm on the run. Lake Erie answered with six straight points, including four from Gabor. The Storm pulled to within seven with 2:29 left in the third. The Redhawks expanded the lead to 11 before Breanna Bauer (Port Huron, Mich. / Northern) ended the quarter with a layup. Lake Erie trailed 57-48 after three quarters.

Roberts Wesleyan pushed the lead to 14 before Farrah Benner (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) knocked down her second consecutive three pointer with 7:45 left in the game. Chaddock, Benner and West combined for a 6-0 run later in the frame as the Storm trimmed the lead to 70-62 with 4:14 remaining. The Redhawks made the lead 11 with two minutes left. Gabor and Benner cut the lead to six but fell 81-73.

Gabor finished with 25 points, including 18 from long range and four assists. Benner scored 11 points, with three treys. West finished one rebound shy of a double-double as she had ten points and nine rebounds. Six of West's rebounds were on the offensive end. Sonneman had eight points and three boards. Dawson pulled down a team-high 13 rebounds, with six on offense.

The Storm had 46 rebounds in the contest, 22 of them were offensive rebounds.

Lake Erie will return to the court after the Thanksgiving holiday as they will travel to take on Bluefield State on Tuesday, November 28th.
