PEPPER PIKE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College women's basketball team opened the 2017-18 Great Midwest Athletic Conference slate with a road matchup at Ursuline College on Saturday (Dec. 2) afternoon.
The Storm fell 70-58 to the Arrows in the conference opener for both squads.
Ursuline opened the game with two three point leads in the first three minutes. After the Arrows took a 5-2 lead, Josie Chaddock (Minerva, Ohio / Minerva) and Sophie Sonneman (Jamestown, Ohio / Greeneview) made back-to-back layups as Lake Erie took the 6-5 lead. A Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) jumper gave the Storm a 12-9 lead with 3:16 left in the first quarter. Following a layup by Ursuline, Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) closed the first quarter with a 5-0 run of her own. Lake Erie led 17-11 after the first quarter.
The Arrows began the second frame with an 8-0 run to take a 19-17 led less than two minutes in. Sonneman tied the contest just seconds later with a layup. Ursuline pushed the lead to five with five straight points, then Lake Erie got two free throws from Dawson and a jumper from Gabor. Lake Erie trimmed the lead to 24-23. The Arrows got the lead back to five points until Gabor scored two consecutive layups. Lake Erie trailed 28-27 with 2:54 left in the half. Ursuline held a 33-31 lead at the break.
Ursuline used a jumper to take a 37-33 lead with 7:25 left in the third quarter. Dawson, Chaddock and Farrah Benner (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) combined for a 6-0 run, capped by a Benner three pointer as Lake Erie led 39-37 with five minutes left. Over the next 90 seconds, the Arrows regained a six point advantage with an 8-0 run. The Storm moved to within one with five straight points, before the Arrows ended the frame with a 6-0 rally. Ursuline led 51-44 after three quarters.
The Arrows continued the run into the fourth quarter with an 8-2 run, holding a 59-46 lead with 6:49 left. Dawson converted a three point play with six minutes left and Ashley West (Willoughby Hills, Ohio / Cornerstone Christian) followed with a free throw. The Storm cut the lead to eight but could not come any closer. Ursuline led by as many as 15 and went on to win 70-58.
Gabor led the Storm with 19 points in the contest, including 17 in the first half along with a season-high five assists. Dawson finished with her third double-double of the year as she scored 11 points and had 11 rebounds with four blocks.
Lake Erie will take to the road as they will travel to Ohio Valley for their next game, on Thursday (Dec. 7).
