ELKINS, W.Va. – The Lake Erie College women's basketball team improved to 5-4 overall and 2-2 in the G-MAC with an 87-65 win over the Davis & Elkins College Senators on Saturday (Dec. 16) afternoon.
"A great team effort bouncing back from a disappointing loss to AB on Thursday," said Storm head coach Bob Booher. "Gabor with a big scoring effort and a very efficient shooting performance today. Fellow senior Christine Dawson moved past a lackluster first half and contributed seven for nine shooting in the second half finishing with 17 points, 14 rebounds, six assists, four steals, and three blocks. Josie Chaddock, playing under the weather, stayed on the court for 32 minutes with nine points and eight rebounds."
Four different players scored on the Storm's game-opening 7-0 run, spanning the first three minutes. The teams exchanged baskets before Davis & Elkins took the lead with a 12-2 run. The Senators took a 14-11 lead with 3:53 left in the first quarter. The Storm cut the lead to one but the Senators held a 19-15 lead after the first period.
Davis & Elkins scored at the outset of the second quarter, opening a 21-17 advantage. Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) went on a 7-0 run by herself as Lake Erie regained a 24-21 lead at the halfway point of the quarter. Megyn Christensen (Swanton, Ohio / Swanton) followed with a three pointer that pushed the lead to six points. Four straight points by Davis & Elkins slimmed the margin to two with two minutes remaining in the half. Gabor scored five straight points as Lake Erie regained a seven point lead late in the half. The Storm led by seven, 34-27 at the half.
The Senators came out of the half with an 8-2 run, pulling within one of the Storm. Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) made a layup and Gabor followed with six straight points as Lake Erie combined on an 8-0 run. After the Senators came back to within five, Jordan Joseph (Solon, Ohio / Solon) capped a Lake Erie 6-0 run with a three point play. Davis & Elkins scored five straight points and Josie Chaddock (Minerva, Ohio / Minerva) responded with five straight points. Sophie Sonneman (Jamestown, Ohio / Greeneview) made a layup that gave the Storm a 60-46 lead after three quarters.
Christensen pushed the lead to 18 in the fourth quarter with a jumper three minutes in. The Senators cut the advantage to 13 while Lake Erie went on a 7-0 run, completed by a Gabor three point play. The Storm pushed the lead to as many as 23 as the Storm won the contest 87-65.
Gabor scored a career-high 35 points in the win, including 14 and 13 points in the second and fourth quarter, respectively. Gabor converted 12-of-15 field goals, including two from long range. She also went nine-for-nine from the free throw line.
Dawson went for a double-double as she scored 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, along with six assists. Ashley West (Willoughby Hills, Ohio / Cornerstone Christian) added ten points while Chaddock ended with nine points and eight rebounds.
The Storm will conclude the eight game road game streak at Kentucky Wesleyan on Tuesday (Dec. 19) at 2:00 PM.
