PAINESVILLE, Ohio - The Lake Erie College women's basketball team ended the 2017 calendar year with a 63-58 victory over the Trevecca Nazarene University Trojans on Saturday (Dec. 30) afternoon at the Osborne Center.
The Storm improved to 6-5 overall and 3-3 in the G-MAC with the victory.
Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) opened the game with a three pointer one minute in, then the Trojans answered with a basket to cut the lead to 3-2. Four different players combined on an 8-0 Lake Erie run that spanned six minutes of the first quarter. Lake Erie led 11-2 with 2:54 left before Trevecca used back-to-back three pointers, trimming the lead to three. Megyn Christensen (Swanton, Ohio / Swanton, Ohio / Swanton) ended the quarter with a three pointer with 13 seconds left. The Storm led 14-8 after the first quarter.
The Trojans tied the game at 16 two minutes into the second quarter with an 8-2 rally. Farrah Benner (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) scored five straight points and Christensen followed with a three pointer as the Storm surged on an 8-0 run. The Storm opened a 24-16 lead at the halfway point of the frame. Following a Trojans trey, Christensen nailed a three pointer that kick started a Lake Erie 6-2 to end the half. The Storm led 30-21 at the intermission.
Over the first four minutes of the second half, the Trojans slimmed the lead to three, 31-28, with a 7-1 run. Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) made a layup that began a Lake Erie 12-0 run over a four minute period. Gabor had six points in the run that opened a 43-28 lead for the Storm. The Storm led 44-30 after the third quarter.
The teams exchanged points over the first two and a half minutes of the fourth quarter. With 7:26 left, the Trojans hit a three pointer that cut the lead to single digits at nine points. Dawson responded with three consecutive points, making it 51-39 in favor of the Storm. Trevecca answered with a 7-0 run over a two minute span, coming within five of the Storm. Gabor knocked down a three pointer but Trevecca converted two straight layups. With a four point lead, Josie Chaddock (Minerva, Ohio / Minerva) and Dawson pushed the advantage to seven with a layup and free throw, respectively. After Dawson's free throw made it 57-50 with 2:20 left, the Trojans chipped away at the lead with an 8-3 run. Trevecca pulled within two in the final thirty seconds. Dawson, Benner and Gabor each made a free throw that solidified the Storm's 63-58 victory.
Gabor ended the day with 19 points, including 14 in the second half along with six rebounds. Dawson scored seven points in the fourth quarter in route to 13 points on the afternoon with a team-high eight rebounds. Chaddock had eleven points for the Storm. Christensen ended with nine points on three treys.
The Storm will return to action in the New Year, hosting Hillsdale College on Thursday (Jan. 4) at 7:30 PM.
