Storm Drops Great Midwest Contest Against Ursuline

PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College women's basketball team was in action today as they were defeated by the Ursuline Arrows, 81-67. 

Farrah Benner (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) opened the scoring as drove down the lane and converted on a layup. The Arrows responded with a 7-1 run that saw them take a 7-3 lead with seven minutes remaining in the first quarter.  The Ursuline run was ended on a layup by Benner, and the Storm trailed 14-9 at the media timeout in the first quarter.  Out of the break, a quick 5-0 run from Lake Erie trimmed the Arrows lead to 18-16.  The Storm run was capped by a Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) three pointer.  Ursuline closed the quarter strong and took a 26-16 edge into the second quarter. 

The second quarter started as a back and forth battle as the Storm trailed 31-23 at the under-five minute media timeout in the second quarter.  Out of the timeout the Arrows went on a 10-3 run, to take a 41-26 edge with just under three minutes remaining in the quarter.  The run was ended by a jumper from Josie Chaddock (Minerva, Ohio / Minerva, and the Lake Erie entered the intermission behind 46-35. 

Out of the locker room, the Storm cut the Arrows lead to single digits, 48-41 as Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor), Ashley West (Willoughby Hills, Ohio / Cornerstone Christian), and Chaddock all had baskets for the storm.  The Storm kept the game close as they entered the third quarter media timeout behind, 60-50.  The final three minutes were a defensive battle as the teams combined for two points over the final three minutes, and the Arrows entered the fourth quarter ahead, 60-52.

The first five minutes of the fourth quarter saw the teams trade baskets, and the Storm entered the final five minutes behind, 69-59.  Out of the break, the Storm was able to cut the lead to six late in the game when Megyn Christensen (Swanton, Ohio / Swanton) hit a three pointer.  Lake Erie was unable to cut into the Arrows lead any further and fell 81-67. 

The Storm was led by Dawson and Gabor, who each scored 13 points. Dawson grabbed six rebounds with two assists and two steals. Gabor had four rebounds and four assists. Chaddock added ten points with three assists. West had nine points and five rebounds for the Storm.

Lake Erie will return the hardwood Tuesday (Jan. 30) when they host Davis and Elkins, with the game set to tip at 7:30 p.m.
