PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College women's basketball team snapped a three game slide with a 77-70 victory over the Davis & Elkins College Senators on Tuesday (Jan. 30) night at the Osborne Center.
Farrah Benner (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) made two three pointers as the Storm opened the game on a 12-2 run over the first four minutes. The Senators closed the lead to 12-7 at the media timeout. Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) pushed the lead to seven with a jumper off of an offensive rebound following the timeout. Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) scored seven of the Storm's final eight points of the quarter as Lake Erie led 22-14 after one quarter.
The Storm and Senators went back-and-forth with baskets over the first four minutes of the second quarter. Josie Chaddock (Minerva, Ohio / Minerva) made a jumper that put the Storm up 28-18 with 5:42 left in the first half. Davis & Elkins slimmed the lead to six with two straight baskets. Breanna Bauer (Port Huron, Mich. / Northern) responded with two consecutive layups. After a Senators jumper, Gabor converted a three point play and Chaddock followed with a jumper as Lake Erie opened a 37-24 advantage. The Storm led 40-31 at the intermission.
Chaddock began the third quarter with four of the first six points for Lake Erie as they opened the quarter on a 6-2 run for a 46-33 advantage. Davis & Elkins made a three pointer, pulling within ten points with 8:37 left in the third quarter. Benner gave the Storm a 14 point lead with a three pointer prior to the media timeout. The Senators made an 8-0 run, closing the gap to 57-51 with 1:44 left in the third. Ashley West (Willoughby Hills, Ohio / Cornerstone Christian) scored the final two baskets of the quarter as Lake Erie took a 61-54 lead to the fourth quarter.
Gabor started the fourth quarter with a jumper that pushed the lead to nine points. The Senators rallied and cut the advantage to four with eight and a half minutes remaining. Davis & Elkins tried to chip away at the lead but the Storm had answers for the Senators. Chaddock, Benner and West all made baskets that distanced the Storm. Lake Erie made six free throws in the final two minutes to clinch the victory.
Gabor led all scorers with 22 points, including six free throws. Benner scored 15 points with four rebounds and a career-high three steals. Chaddock had 14 points and a career-high seven assists. Dawson fell just short of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds along with four assists and three blocks.
The Storm will open the month of February with a Great Midwest contest against Ohio Valley at the Osborne Center on Saturday (Feb. 3) at 3:00 PM.
