PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College women's basketball team opened the month of February with a 77-66 victory over the Ohio Valley Fighting Scots on Saturday (Feb. 3) afternoon at the Osborne Center on Fan Appreciation Day.
The Storm improved to 11-11 on the year, the most wins for the Storm since the 2011-12 season.
Ohio Valley opened the game with a 9-4 lead in the first three minutes. The Storm responded with an 8-2 run over the next three minutes. Kayla Gabor (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) scored five points on the run as the Storm took the lead, 12-11. The Fighting Scots regained the lead quickly before Megyn Christensen (Swanton, Ohio / Swanton) and Sophie Sonneman (Jamestown, Ohio / Greeneview) ended the first quarter with layups. Lake Erie led 16-13 after one quarter.
Josie Chaddock (Minerva, Ohio / Minerva) kick started the second quarter with a jumper as Lake Erie scored the first five points of the frame, opening a 21-13 lead with six minutes remaining in the first half. Over the next two minutes, Ohio Valley closed the deficit to three points. Lake Erie scored six consecutive points as the Storm closed the half with a 31-22 lead.
Gabor led the Storm with nine points in the first half.
Christine Dawson (Mentor, Ohio / Mentor) opened the third quarter with a three-point play and Gabor followed with a layup as Lake Erie continued the run into the second half. The Storm held a 36-22 lead with nine minutes remaining in the third. Ashley West (Willoughby Hills, Ohio / Cornerstone Christian) made a layup that pushed the advantage to 15 points. After Ohio Valley trimmed the lead to 12, Chaddock scored seven points of a Lake Erie 9-0 run. The Storm led 54-33 with two minutes left in the third quarter. The Fighting Scots made two three pointers as Ohio Valley trailed 54-39 after three quarters.
Christensen began the fourth quarter with a three pointer and Breanna Bauer (Port Huron, Mich. / Northern) added a layup a minute later that pushed the Storm's lead to 20. Bauer scored two more layups to keep the Fighting Scots at bay. Sonneman gave the Storm a 22 point lead with four minutes left. The Fighting Scots made a late run and closed the gap to nine before Alexis Todd (Columbus, Ohio / Westerville Central) ended the game with a jumper. Lake Erie won 77-66.
Gabor scored 16 points with five rebounds and four assists. Chaddock added 14 points with five boards and five assists. Dawson fell short of a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds. Bauer tied a career-high with eight points.
The Storm will travel to Findlay on Thursday (Feb. 8) for a game that will tip-off at 8:00 PM.
