PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie women's basketball team completed a sweep with a critical Great Midwest Athletic Conference win over the Ohio Dominican University Panthers (11-11, 8-8) tonight. The Storm's overall record improves to an even 10-10, with a G-MAC record of 7-8.
The Panthers started the game strong with commanding momentum, but a layup by Josie Chaddock cut the lead in half (16-8) with 3:47 and caused the Panther's head coach to call a timeout with 3:47 left to play in the first quarter. The first quarter ended with a score of 22-17, but two minutes into the second quarter a three-pointer by Farrah Benner put the Storm within five. Sophie Sonneman drew a foul, and was able to put the Storm within two for the first time with a made shot from the charity stripe. Josie Chaddock made a layup to tie the game 28-all shortly afterwards, however the Panthers went into the locker rooms at halftime edging the Storm 37-34.
Maddie Mattimore tied the game up again thirty seconds into the second half, and the Storm went on a four point run to lead the Panthers 41-37, before the two teams continued to exchange leads in the second half of the contest. However, a pair of threes by Farrah Benner helped put the Storm up for good to secure the win with a final score of 77-72.
Lake Erie had four student-athletes with double-digit points tonight. Leading the team was Storm junior, and starter, Josie Chaddock. Chaddock recorded 30 points with six steals and four assists. Ashley West added ten points, five rebounds, and one assist.
The Storm bench added life to the offense tonight, as they were responsible for 28 points. Farrah Benner added 14 points, six rebounds, and one assist, shooting 50 percent from the field and 44 percent from range. Additionally, Storm freshman Laney Billing added eleven points and a steal, while working hard under the basket for the Storm, adding six rebounds.
Storm women's basketball returns to action on their home court for another G-MAC matchup against Ohio Valley University on Saturday, Feb. 9. Tip-off is scheduled for 1pm.
