PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Visiting Gannon University raced out to a 5-0 lead in the opening minutes and the 10th-ranked Knights went on to a convincing 18-6 victory over the Lake Erie College women's lacrosse team in a nonconference game Tuesday night (April 12) at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium.
Sophomore Brittany Rabuano (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) assisted on one goal and scored another as the Storm (2-7) remained within five at the midway point of the first half at 7-2.
But Gannon closed the period with a 6-1 run to take a 13-3 lead into halftime. The final 30 minutes were contested closer, with the Knights holding a 5-3 edge in second half scoring.
Sophomore Meredith Howe (Fayetteville, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) had two goals to lead Lake Erie. Rabuano and classmates Kim Dang (Atlanta, Ga./Jackson) and Julia Kudla (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) each scored a goal, along with freshman Annie Mendoza (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Catholic).
Gannon (9-4-1) was led by Mary Eshenour's five goals. Jess Fugate scored four times and Sarah Grzybinski three times for the Knights, who also got two goals and four assists from Rachel DerCola.
The Storm was outshot 41-17 in the contest and committed 20 turnovers.
Lake Erie resumes East Coast Conference play on Saturday, April 16, at Dowling College.
