PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Lake Erie College (3-13 ECC, 1-7 ECC) women's lacrosse came to play in its season finale against Bridgeport University (0-11, 0-8 ECC) and jumped all over the ECC foe in a 17-2 road victory in Bridgeport, Conn.
It was a classic team effort from the Storm as four players shared top scoring honors for the game. Sophomore Julia Kudla (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton), Meredith Howe (Fayetteville, N.Y./Jamesville Dewilt) and Allison Trombetti (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy) and freshman Annie Mendoza (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Catholic) each had three goals on the day as in total nine members of the Storm found the back of the net. Among the individual scorers for Lake Erie was senior defender Caitlin Malay (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bethel Park/Waynesburg), a rare goal from the backline in Malay's final career game. Also scoring was sophomore Tiffanie Johnson (Hilliard, Ohio/Darby) with her first goal as a two-year member of the Storm.
Her sister sophomore Brittanie Johnson (Hilliard, Ohio/Darby) manned the net for the Storm and made eight saves to earn the win.
The game got off to a slow start as Lake Erie didn't score in the first 17 minutes of the game, and trailed Bridgeport, 1-0. Kudla finally kicked off the scoring on a free position shot for the Green and White at the 12:22 mark and things finally opened up with the Storm taking an 8-2 edge to the break.
Lake Erie's defense was outstanding over the final 30 minutes, not allowing a single Bridgeport goal. Howe had the only score for Lake Erie in the first 12 minutes of that half, but the Storm poured things on over the final 18 minutes with nine more tallies.
Lake Erie was led in assists by Kudla with four and sophomore Brittany Rabuano (Auburn, N.Y/Auburn) had three to go along with a goal.
The Storm took 32 shots to just 15 for Bridgeport and won the battle of groundballs narrowly, 28-25.
The win closed out the 2011 season for women's lacrosse in Lake Erie's second season of competition.
