Win Over No. 17 Limestone Highlights Storm's Split at Newberry Duals

PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Victories over No. 17 Limestone College and Anderson University (N.C.) gave the Lake Erie College wrestling team a split of its four matches at the Newberry College Duals on Saturday (Dec. 10) in Newberry, S.C.

The Storm (4-4) upset Limestone 29-12 and then routed Anderson 35-9 to close the day.  Earlier, Lake Erie lost to the nation's top-ranked team, host Newberry 47-0 and also fell to No. 18 University of North Carolina-Pembroke 25-15.

After opening the day with a disappointing loss to the first-ranked team in the country, the Storm put on a strong showing in defeat against UNC-Pembroke.  Sophomore Tom McVicker (South Fork, Pa./Forest Hills/Penn Highlands C.C.) pinned his opponent just 30 seconds into the bout at 141 pounds and sophomore Zev Green (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) picked up the first of his three wins on the day with a 7-1 decision at 174 pounds.  Freshman Austin Gillihan (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) also won by forfeit at 125 pounds.

Lake Erie finally broke through into the win column by winning six straight matches against Limestone.  Junior Justin Toth (Painesville, Ohio/Riverside/Mt. Union) won by decision at 125 and Gillihan picked up a pin at 133 pounds to open the scoring.  After McVicker dropped his match at 141, Lake Erie claimed the next six bouts, including five by decision.  Redshirt freshman Dylan Zivcic (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor/Lakeland) kicked off the streak with a pin at 149 then sophomore Tyler Tesney (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls) and freshman Matt Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) followed with decision at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively.  Green pulled out a 7-6 decision at 174 pounds for his second win of the day and freshman Jon Schafer (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Peter Chanel) and redshirt freshman Michael Samiljenko (Parma, Ohio/Normandy)  clinched the match with victories at 184 and 197.

In the final match of the day, the Storm took eight of the 10 matches to easily outdistance Anderson.  Toth, Gillihan, Zivcic, Tesny, Vandermeer, Green and Samijlenko all won again at their respective weight classes while two sophomore Josh Linden (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) earned a victory by fall at 184 pounds.

Overall, Green finished 3-1 on the day to lead the Storm.  Toth was 2-0 and Gilliahn was 2-1 with a forfeit victory as well. Tesny, Samiljenko, Vandermeer and Zivcic all went 2-2.
