Storm Slams Millersville on the Road, 44-3

MILLERSVILLE, PA. –  The Lake Erie College wrestling team bounced back from its Friday night loss at 12th-ranked University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown in emphatic fashion, winning nine-of-10 matches en route to a 44-3 nonconference victory over Millersville University at Pucillo Gymnasium in Millersville.

The 41-point margin of victory by the Storm (7-3) set a school record and the 44 points were the most tallied by Lake Erie since a 44-5 win over Baldwin Wallace University on Jan. 14, 2012. And it came against a team that was competing at the NCAA Division I level a year ago, as the Marauders are in their first season transitioning to DII.

The Storm jumped out quickly with sophomore Ian Ross (Newark, N.Y./Newark) earning a 4-0 decision at 125 pounds and classmate Austin Gillihan (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) following with a pin of Thomas Nulty at 133 pounds for his team-leading fifth pin and 12th victory in his last 13 matches.

After Millersville (0-5) earn its lone points with a decision by David Charles at 141 pounds, the Storm ran off seven straight victories to close the dual.

Three of those victories came by fall, with juniors Zak Vargo (Stow, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) and Zev Green (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) getting pins at 157 pounds and 184 pounds, respectively, before freshman Almonte Patrick (Maple Heights, Ohio/Maple Heights) closed out the day with a pin at heavyweight.

Sophomore Nate Ball (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) defeated Joshua Ruppert 24-5 at 149 pounds for the technical fall.  Fellow sophomore and All-American Matt Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston)  also won by tech fall, defeating James Shields 17-1 for his team-best 11th straight victory.

Sophomore Dylan Zivcic (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) won by major decision at 174 pounds, taking down Dane Woodruff 12-3, while freshman Devin Smith (Salem, Va./Salem) picked up his first career dual victory with an 8-2 decision over Daniel Cox at 197 pounds.

The Storm now sets its sights on Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival and 18th-ranked Ashland University, who Lake Erie will face on the road Tuesday night, Jan. 15.
