Storm's Winning Streak Snapped by Second-Ranked Falcons

SOUTH EUCLID, OHIO –  The Lake Erie College wrestling team split its first four bouts Sunday afternoon (Jan. 27) before second-ranked Notre Dame College pulled away by winning the final six contests en route to a 33-6 victory at Murphy Gymnasium, snapping the Storm's three-match winning streak.

With sophomores Ian Ross (Newark, N.Y./Newark) and Nate Ball (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) picking up decision victories at 125 and 149 pounds, respectively, the Storm (9-4, 1-2 GLIAC) trailed just 9-6 with middle weights coming up.

Three of the next four matches were decisions decided by three points or less, but all went the way of the Falcons (6-1, 2-0 GLIAC).  Louden Gordon beat junior Zak Vargo (Stow, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy), 6-5, at 157 pounds and then Joey Davis edged sophomore All-American Matt Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) 5-2 in a match-up of the top two ranked wrestlers at 165 pounds.

Eric Burgey, ranked third at 174 pounds, defeated junior Tyler Tesny (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls), 12-6, in a match that Tesny led in the third period.  Charles Mason then held off junior Zev Green (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) 3-1 in a close match at 184 pounds, putting Notre Dame up 21-6.

Earlier, at 133 pounds, Marty Carlson decisioned Austin Gillihan (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) 12-8 in another contest where the Storm held a lead late.

"We got two good wins early from Ian and Nate, and we had chances in a lot of other individual matches," said head coach Kevin Hoogenboom. "Seven of the 10 matches today went down to the wire, especially those four in the middle. We just weren't able to get any of those to go our way and you need to be able to do that to beat a good team like Notre Dame."

The Falcons distanced themselves on the scoreboard with a pair of wins at 197 pounds and heavyweight.

The Storm will face their third nationally ranked team in four dual matches—and fourth in six contests – when they travel to ninth-ranked West Liberty University on Thursday, Jan. 31, for a nonconference dual.
