PAINESVILLE, Ohio— The Lake Erie College wrestling team dominated Tiffin University in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) dual Friday (Jan. 23) in Painesville.
The Storm won the dual 31-6. They move to 2-0 in conference duals and has a shot for their second straight GLIAC Championship when they face the University of Findlay on Feb. 13.
Forrest Glogouski (New Paris, Ind./Fairfield) scored the first points in his 125-pound bout against Giusepe Penzone with a takedown midway through the first period. Glogouski picked up two more points on a nearfall to take a 4-1 lead into the second period. He increased his lead to 6-1 after a penalty point and an escape. Glogouski scored another near fall to gain two more points. Penmore cut the lead to 8-3 with a takedown in the third but Glogouski reversed it to move ahead by seven points. Glogouski picked up two more points via penalty and riding time to win by major decision, 12-3.
Ian Ross (Newark, N.Y./Newark) took Nick Pope down to take a 2-0 lead in the first period in their 133-pound bout. A near fall gave Ross a 4-0 lead heading into the second period. Two more near falls gave Ross an 8-0 lead after two. In third, Ross landed multiple takedowns and near falls en route to a 22-4 technical fall.
Nick Boggs (Concord, Ohio/Riverside) faced seventh-ranked Mike Screptock at 141-pounds. Screptock scored the first point of the bout with an escape in the second period. After a takedown, Boggs scored an escape to cut the deficit to two heading into the third. Boggs escaped to start the third and landed a takedown to take a 4-3 lead. Screptock escaped to force sudden victory. In sudden victory, Boggs landed a takedown for the 6-4 upset win.
Zak Vargo (Stow, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) took a 2-0 lead into the second period against Jett Hurt at 149-pounds. He increased his lead to three with an escape to start the second period. In the third, Vargo scored a nearfall to move ahead 6-0. A point of riding time gave the Vargo the 7-0 decision victory.
Sam Viengmany scored the first points against Christian Baughman (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) with a takedown in their 157-pound bout. Baughman cut the lead to one with an escape then scored a takedown and a pair of near falls to move ahead 8-2. An escape cut the lead to 8-3 heading into the second period. Baughman scored a pair of takedowns in the second as he took a 13-8 lead into the third. In the start of the third, Baughman landed another takedown and a three point near fall to bring the score to 19-9. Baughman closed out the match with another takedown to pick up a 21-11 major decision.
After a scoreless first period, Matt Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) kept Chase Boyd down for the duration of the second period. Vandermeer scored a reversal in the third period and picked up a point of riding time for 3-1 decision.
Jared Chambers scored the first points against Dylan Zivcic (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor/Lakeland) in their 174-pound bout. After Zivcic escaped, Chambers scored a takedown and a three point nearfall to gain a 7-2 advantage heading into the second. Zivcic escaped to start the second and landed a takedown to cut the lead to 7-5 going into the third. Chambers wrapped up the bout with a pair of takedowns in the third, giving the Dragons their first win of the dual.
After a scoreless first period between Zev Green (Marysville, Ohio/Marysville) and Chris Baker at 184-pounds, Baker scored a reversal late in the second to take a 2-0 lead into the third. Green escaped to start the third and sent the bout into sudden victory with a riding time point. In the extra session, Green scored a takedown to win the bout 4-2.
Evan Rosborough, Division-II's pin fall leader, (Concord Twp., Ohio/Riverside) dominated the first period against Jake Carizales at 197-pounds, scoring a takedown and five near fall points to take a 7-0 lead into the second period. Rosborough scored a takedown to start the second and worked it into a pin fall, his 15th of the season.
Second ranked heavyweight Garrett Gray gained a 2-1 advantage in the first period against Noah Hosking (Mildford, Mich./Milford). Garret increased his lead to 5-1 in the second. Hosking scored two points in the third but it was not enough to overcome Grays lead as he picked up the decision win.
The Storm is back in action Sunday (Jan 25) when they host second-ranked Notre Dame College at 2 p.m.
