Storm Splits in Top-20 Tri-Match

PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College wrestling team hosted two top 20 teams as a part of a tri-match at the Osborne Center on Saturday (Jan. 28).

Lake Erie finished the day with a split. The Storm defeated #16 Kutztown University 29-12 but fell to #12 Ashland University in the final match of the afternoon.

The Storm won seven of the ten matches against the Kutztown Golden Bears en route to a 29-12 win.

Lake Erie started with a 6-0 lead after Kutztown forfeited at 125 pounds.

Andrew Lieb (Pataskala, Ohio / Watkins) took on Lucas Miller at 133-pounds.  Lieb led 4-2 in the first period on a takedown and a reversal. Miller got a late takedown in the third round to force overtime with the score tied at six. In the first overtime, Lieb won the match with a takedown early. Lake Erie held a 9-0 lead after two matches.

At 141-pounds, Kutztown's Ryne Morrison went up against Zach Ruggles (Marietta, NY / Marcellus) for the Storm. Brown scored an early takedown and near-fall before winning by fall in the first period.

Third-ranked Nick Boggs (Concord, Ohio / Riverside) battled Mikey O'Brien for the Golden Bears. Boggs jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a takedown and a two-point near fall. O'Brien fought back with an escape and a takedown. In the second period, each wrestler exchanged an escape and a takedown. Boggs used two takedowns and a two-point near fall to distance himself in the third period. Boggs won via decision at 13-10. Lake Erie led 12-5 after a point was taken from Kutztown's team on an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

157-pounder Christian Baughman (Wadsworth, Ohio / Wadsworth) used seven takedowns, including four in the final period to roll to a 16-7 major decision against James Meyer for Kutztown.

Sixth-ranked Nick Vandermeer (Clarkston, Mich. / Clarkston) opened an 8-0 lead in the 165 pound matchup against Billy Manley. Manley got a reversal in the third period following a Vandermeer takedown. With under a minute left in the match, Vandermeer got the pin over Manley. Vandermeer's pin pushed the Storm's lead to 22-5.

Brendan Winning (Ravenna, Ohio / Ravenna) fell behind early against Joe Balboni at 174 pounds. Balboni scored back-to-back takedowns in the second and third periods for a 9-4 decision win.

Sixth-ranked Tyler Hughes (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) started the second period with a reversal out of the gate after a scoreless first period. Hughes got a takedown and two near falls in the third period as he defeated Jeff Reimel by an 11-2 major decision at 184 pounds.

Isaiah Wheeler (Copley, Ohio / Copley / Stark State) took on James Potts at 197 pounds. Wheeler opened the first period with two takedowns. He followed with a second period escape and takedown. Potts made a third period flurry but Wheeler hung on a 9-6 decision win. Lake Erie led 29-8 going into the final match.

Ninth-ranked Ryan Appleby scored four takedowns throughout the match against Zach Wood (Clarkston, Mich. / Oxford / Limestone). Appleby won by a 9-1 major decision over Wood. The Storm won 29-12.

In the second match of the day, Ashland won nine of the ten matchups as the Eagles won 35-3.

At 125-pounds, Blake Glogouski (New Paris, Ind. / Fairfield) scored two takedowns in the last two periods as he worked back from an early deficit against Sebastian Vidika. Glogouski won by an 8-5 decision.

Ashland closed the day with nine straight wins.

The Storm will return the home mat at the Osborne Center on Friday (Feb. 3) as they host Tiffin.
