Storm Rings Up First G-MAC Wrestling Title, Fourth Conference Title In Six Years

(TIFFIN, Ohio) – The inaugural Great Midwest Athletic Conference wrestling championship trophy will be coming to Painesville as Lake Erie went unbeaten in dual action to secure a fourth conference championship in program history. After cruising by Kentucky Wesleyan yesterday, the Storm raged on with wins over Findlay 24-18, No. 11 Tiffin 26-20, and finally Alderson Broaddus 38-7 to bring home the hardware.

Lake Erie (8-3) was picked to finish third at the start of the season with the Dragons picked to win the conference. Findlay was voted to finish as the runner-up.

"It feels great to be part of history," said Head Coach Jeff Breese after the win. "We want to be history makers in our program. We beat two nationally ranked programs and used nearly every person on our roster to get that done. I am most proud of guys fighting for one another and making decisions based on the team. The event was a great atmosphere, and Tiffin and the G-MAC did a top-notch job of creating a championship level event," said G-MAC.

As the scores indicated, it wasn't an easy road by any means with the first two matches decided by the result of the heavyweight bought. In the opener against the Oilers, Lake Erie held an 18-6 lead going into the final three bouts. Findlay secured six-point victories in the next two contests, but forfeited at 285 to give the Storm the win.

Then came the nationally ranked Dragons in what ended up determining the title. Wins by Nick Boggs (157), Sean O'Hearon (165), and Tylor Orrison (174) put some separation between the Storm and Tiffin, but the hosts came back to tie the match at 20-20 heading into the heavyweight contest.

There Evan Loughman did what Evan Loughman does best. At 4:32 the Thornville, Ohio-native recorded his NCAA II-best 10th pin fall of the season. The proverbial walk-off win gave the Storm six points, but more importantly the team win and prime position for the championship.

"We felt very confident in Evan," said Breese. "He had to wrestle a simple match and look for a decision initially. His ability to score in basic positions opened up his opportunity for the fall. Evan is the best pinner in D2 right now. Once he got his opportunity it was a big sigh of relief, but we had another dual to go so there was no time for too much celebration."

Wasting little time against the Battlers, Jason Brewster (125), Forrest Glogouski (133), and Andrew Lieb (141) won the first three bouts and put the Storm up 13-0 before AB got on the scoreboard with a decision at 149.

No. 11 Nick Boggs, Sean O'Hearon, John Penfold, Chris Droege, and Loughman all added more points to the team total as the Storm cruised to the win. Loughman even added an 11th to his leading total, this time in 1:58.

This championships joins the prior three won by the program from 2014 to 2016 as members of the GLIAC. It's also the second G-MAC championship of any sports at Lake Erie as wrestling joins the women's lacrosse team who did so last spring.

The Storm still has a couple of duals left on the schedule with both of those events taking place at home. The first of those will be Friday when Lake Erie hosts Ashland. The first bout is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
