PAINESVILLE, OHIO – Lake Erie College (3-20) was able to snap its losing streak by defeating Urbana University (8-23) in four sets in a home match at the Jerome T. Osborne Family and Athletic Wellness Center.
It was a balanced attack which spurred Lake Erie as sophomore Molly Richardson (Fort Wayne, Ind./Bishop Dwenger) led the Storm with 12 kills while classmate Jamie Hoppe (Green Springs, Ohio/Clyde) was close behind with 11. Junior Mary Walter (Solon, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) and sophomore Kristin Swann (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) each had solid hitting days with nine kills. Senior Krista O'Connor directed the Storm attack with a team-high 26 assists.
The first set was a back and forth with neither taking more than a two point lead until well into the set. Urbana however rattled off the last four points for a 25-19 victory.
The second set started off in similar fashion but Lake Erie made its move earlier in the set. Up 13-11, the Storm scored six straight points on the serve of Richardson and controlled the rest of the set to even the match.
The third set was nearly identical to the second as Lake Erie led 12-10 and picked up five of the next six points to take a comfortable lead. Urbana fought back into the set but an O'Connor kill finished the game. The Storm led much of the fourth set, as the momentum carried them to victory.
"We played with a lot of energy and controlled our mistakes," said Head Coach Brian Coughlin. "It was a solid all-around effort from Jamie Hoppe and several of the other players."
Lake Erie continues its home stand with a Friday night match vs. Ohio Dominican.
