PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Lake Erie College volleyball team was defeated today by #4 ranked Ferris St. University in straight sets (25-18, 25-13, 25-20). With the loss the Storm falls to 5-10 overall and 1-8 in conference play, and with the win the Bulldogs improve to 17-1 overall and 9-0 in the conference.
The first set started as a back and forth rally that saw the score reach 9-9, Ferris St. went on a 5-1 run and took a 14-10 advantage in the first set. The Storm continued to battle but were unable to overtake the Bulldogs in the first set, Ferris St. won the first set 25-18. Madison Russell (Westerville, Ohio / Westerville South) led the Storm with three kills, and Courtney Stedman (Mount Prospect, Ill. / Hersey) led the defense with five digs in set one.
Ferris St. took an early second set lead and continued to add on as the score reached 14-6, before the Storm took a timeout to slow the Bulldogs momentum. The Bulldogs held on to win the second set, 25-13. Offensively Leondra Barrett (Chattanooga, Tn. / Ooltewah) had three kills, and defensively Crystal Kedroske (Dexter, Mich. / Dexter) had six digs in the second set.
In the third set, the Storm jumped out to a 14-10 lead. Ferris St. responded to take a 15-14 lead when the Storm was forced to take a timeout. Lake Erie scored three straight points after the timeout to take a 17-15 advantage. The Storm stretched the lead to 19-16 to force a timeout by the Bulldogs. Ferris St. came out of the timeout and over took the Storm to win the third set, 25-20.
Offensively, the Storm was led by Barrett who tallied nine kills in the match. Defensively, the Storm was led by Kedroske who had a team high 14 digs. In addition to Kedroske, Sidney Fletcher (Saline, Mich. / Saline) also recorded double-digit digs with 12 in the match.
Lake Erie will be back in action Friday (October 16th) when they travel to the Midwest Crossover.
