TIFFIN, Ohio – The Lake Erie College volleyball team was victorious in straight sets today over Tiffin University. With the win the Storm improves to 8-18 overall and 3-13 in the conference and with the loss the Dragons fall to 10-17 overall and 5-11 in conference play.
The Storm jumped out to an early lead in the first set when they scored five of the first six points, to take a 5-1 lead, behind two Leondra Barrett (Chattanooga, Tn. / Ooltewah) kills. The Dragons battled back and overtook the Storm with a 13-12 lead. The Storm went on 4-0 run late in the set to cut the Tiffin lead to 24-23, to force a Tiffin timeout. Lake Erie rode their moment to win the first set (27-25). Barrett led the way for the Storm with eight kills in the first set.
The second set started as a back and forth battle, before the Storm went on an 11-3 run, to take a 19-11 advantage, to force a Tiffin timeout. Lake Erie continued to dominate the second set, and won (25-18). Lake Erie was led by Courtney Stedman (Mount Prospect, Ill. / Hersey) who had 15 assists, eight digs, and four kills in the first two sets.
The third set was a hard fought battle, which saw the Dragons take a 15-14 lead, before Tiffin took a timeout. The Storm overtook the Dragons and won the final frame (25-17).
Offensively, the Storm was led by Barrett who had a game high 16 kills. In addition to Barrett, Bethany Fisher (Orrville, Ohio / Dalton) pitched in with 12 kills in the match.
Defensively, Sidney Fletcher (Saline, Mich. / Saline) led the way for the Storm with 20 digs in the match. Also contributing on defense was Stedman and Alexis Thomas (Cincinnati, Ohio / Fairfield) who had 12 and 11 digs respectively.
Lake Erie will be back in action Tuesday (November 10th) when they travel to take on Notre Dame at 7 P.M.
