Storm Wins Sixth Straight in Five Set Battle

PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College volleyball team battled for a second consecutive five set match and they came away with the 3-2 (25-23, 11-25, 22-25, 26-24, 15-11) victory at home on Friday (Sept. 16) against the Walsh Cavaliers.

The Storm improved to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in the GLIAC with the sixth straight victory. Lake Erie fought from two sets to one to force the final set in which they prevailed.

In set one, the Storm and Walsh battled back and forth to stay close with each other. Late in the set, Lake Erie held a 19-13 lead with two Walsh errors. Walsh tied the set at 21 with back-to-back service aces. Bethany Fisher ended the set with a kill and a 1-0 Storm lead.

Walsh jumped out to an early lead in set two and never looked back as they tied the match at one set. Like set one, the two teams battled with runs back and forth. With the Storm up 9-7, Walsh went on a 7-0 run to take a five point lead. Lake Erie capped a 5-1 run to tie it at 16. After a 21-21 tie, Walsh took a 2-1 lead with a 4-1 run to close the set.

Lake Erie stormed out to multiple five point leads throughout the set. A 6-1 late run by Walsh tied the game at 22. Walsh took a 24-23 lead into a timeout.  Following the timeout, Crystal Kedroske (Dexter, Mich. /Dexter) and Lee Lee Barrett (Chattanooga, Tenn. /Ooltewah) combined for three kills to regain the lead and take set four by two.

Walsh opened the final set with a 6-3 run. Lake Erie used three kills and three errors to force a Cavaliers timeout after a 6-1 run to lead 9-7. Brooke Peiffer (Lansing, Mich. /Lansing) and Kedroske ended the match with back-to-back kills for the Storm.

Peiffer and Kedroske each led the Storm with 14 kills in the match. Kedroske also had 19 digs on the defensive end. Barrett added ten kills and two blocks for the Storm. Alexis Thomas (Cincinnati, Ohio/Fairfield) was very active as she made 45 assists and had 13 digs in the match. Sidney Fletcher (Saline, Mich. /Saline) led with a match-high 24 digs and three service aces. Jess McPeek (Madison, Ohio/Madison) added 11 digs for the defense.

The Storm will be back in action with two games on Saturday (Sept. 17) at Ursuline College. They will face Davis and Elkins at 10:00 AM and Ursuline at 12:00 PM.
