ASHLAND, Ohio- The Lake Erie College volleyball team opened the 2017 campaign at the Quality Inn Ashland University Tournament on Friday (Sept. 1).
The Storm opened the day with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 24-26, 25-19) win over Truman State University and then fell 3-0 (23-25, 18-25, 22-25) in the second game of the day against Pitt-Johnstown.
Lake Erie opened the first set with a 5-1 run leading to a Truman timeout. The Storm pushed the lead to eight at 12-4 on a kill by Hallie Zumack (Independence, Ohio / Independence). The Bulldogs rallied and tied the set at 21 apiece. Truman State took the first set with a 25-23 win.
Both teams exchanged points in the second set as the teams tied five times. As Truman State tied the set at 7-7, they extended the lead to five at 17-12. Bethany Fisher (Orrville, Ohio / Dalton) capped an 8-2 Lake Erie run as the Storm took a 21-20 lead. Fisher ended the set and a 13-3 Storm rally for a 25-20 victory.
The third set was a very competitive one for both teams. The set included 14 ties and eight lead changes. Neither team had a lead larger than two points. After Truman State tied the set at 24, Lake Erie got a kill from Fisher and an error. The Storm gained a 2-1 advantage with a 26-24 set win.
In the fourth set, the teams battled for the first ten points. After a 5-5 tie, Lake Erie forced a timeout with a 4-1 run. Later in the set, Truman State got an ace that tied the set at 14. Lake Erie began to distance themselves and capped off the match with a Fisher kill. Lake Erie took the match 3-1 with a 25-19 set four win.
Fisher finished with 17 kills in the match. Brooke Peiffer (Lansing, Mich. / Holt) added nine kills and 16 digs. Alexis Thomas (Cincinnati, Ohio / Fairfield) led the team with 26 assists and also had 11 digs on defense. Sidney Fletcher (Saline, Mich. / Saline) was the leader on defense with 24 digs.
The Storm kicked off the first set with a 4-1 spurt. Pitt-Johnstown tied the set at seven before the teams went back and forth for the majority of the set. Lake Erie held a 23-19 lead late in the set but the Mountain Cats rallied with six straight points to take the set 25-23.
The second set featured eight ties in the early going. Pitt-Johnstown took a 13-9 lead and continued to distance themselves from the Storm. The Mountain Cats ended the set with a 25-18 score.
Lake Erie was able to gain a 10-7 lead after a back and forth beginning to the third set. The Mountain Cats fought back to tie the game at 16. Lake Erie scored three straight points but UPJ bounced back with four straight tallies. Fisher tied the game at 21 each with a kill. Pitt-Johnstown took the set and match with a 25-22 set three victory.
Peiffer led the Storm with ten kills along with five digs on defense. Fisher ended the match with eight kills. Zumack had 13 assists and a team-high 13 digs. Morgan Briggs (Cadillac, Mich. / Cadillac) chipped in 12 digs.
The Storm will return to the court on Saturday (Sept. 2) with matches against Urbana and Ashland.
