CEDARVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College volleyball team fell to the Cedarville University Yellow Jackets on Friday (Sept. 22) night in a Great Midwest matchup on the road.
The Storm was defeated 3-0 (19-25, 20-25, 17-25) by the Yellow Jackets.
Lake Erie gained two early leads in the first set before Cedarville rallied back and tied the set both times. The Storm cut the lead to 8-7 until the Yellow Jackets scored three straight points for a four point advantage. Cedarville pushed the lead to 17-10 before Lake Erie used three straight points, cutting the lead to four. The Yellow Jackets expanded the lead to six before winning the first set 25-19.
Cedarville took a 5-4 lead in the second set and pushed it to 11-4 with six straight points. The Yellow Jackets led by as many as ten points in the set with a 16-6 lead. Bethany Fisher (Orrville, Ohio / Dalton) had some crucial kills as the Storm rallied to trim the lead to three at 23-20. Cedarville scored the final two points for a 25-20 set two win.
The home team scored four of the first five points in the third set as Cedarville took a 4-1 lead. Lake Erie tied the set at five with a short spurt until Cedarville used five straight points on a run to establish a 10-5 lead. The teams exchanged points until the Storm pulled to within one point late in the set. Cedarville clinched the match with a 9-2 run as they won set three 25-17.
Fisher led all players with 15 kills in the match while Brooke Peiffer added nine kills of her own. Alexis Thomas (Cincinnati, Ohio / Fairfield) led the Storm with 23 assists. Sidney Fletcher (Saline, Mich. / Saline) had 15 digs in the match.
The Storm will continue Great Midwest play on Saturday (Sept. 23) at Ohio Dominican.
