Storm Rallies for 3-1 Victory Over #25 Findlay

PAINESVILLE, Ohio- The Lake Erie College volleyball team used a key rally in the fourth set to defeat the 25th-ranked University of Findlay Oilers on Friday (Oct. 6) night at the Osborne Center.

Lake Erie defeated the Oilers 3-1 (25-19, 25-8, 20-25, 27-25) after a 12-2 run to force extra points in the fourth set.

The Storm scored the first four points of the game and seven of the first ten for a 7-3 lead early. The Oilers chipped away at the lead as they cut the lead to one at 10-9. Lake Erie began to pull away as the Storm extended the lead to seven after a Findlay timeout. The Storm led by as many as eight before pulling away for a 25-19 set one victory.

The second set was all Lake Erie as the Storm opened the set with a 5-1 lead, including two service aces by Sidney Fletcher (Saline, Mich. / Saline). Findlay took a timeout after Lake Erie led 10-5. After the timeout, Lake Erie finished the set with a 15-3 run that clinched the second set 25-8.

Lake Erie took advantage of some early Findlay errors in the third set as the Storm led 4-1 early. The Oilers used a 10-2 run as they forced a Lake Erie timeout with an 11-6 lead. The Storm slowly worked the lead down to one in the set. A Lexi Lombardo kill cut the deficit to one late in the set at 19-18. Findlay took the third set 25-20 over the Storm.

The teams went back and forth in the fourth set as neither team led by more than two. After a 5-5 tie, Findlay regained the lead with a 7-2 run into a Lake Erie timeout. Findlay led by seven when the Storm called the second timeout of the set. The Oilers pushed close to a set point with a 24-15 lead. Lake Erie used five straight points to force a timeout, down 24-20. Crystal Kedroske (Dexter, Mich. / Dexter) tied the game at 24 with a kill. After a another set point for Findlay, Lake Erie got kills from Alexis Thomas (Cincinnati, Ohio / Fairfield) and Kedroske for a 26-25 lead. Lombardo and Kedroske combined on a block that clinched the set and the match for the Storm. The Storm won set four 27-25.

Bethany Fisher (Orrville, Ohio / Dalton) and Kedroske each led the Storm with 13 kills. Kedroske also had four block assists. Brooke Peiffer (Lansing, Mich. / Holt) added ten kills and 12 digs. Thomas had a team-high 22 assists and 18 digs on defense. Fletcher made four service aces and a game-high 33 digs. Lombardo combined on five block assists.

The Storm will return to the court on Saturday (Oct. 7) afternoon with a matchup against Hillsdale College at 1:00 PM.
