PHILIPPI, W.Va. - The Lake Erie College women's volleyball concluded a three match swing through West Virginia with a match against the Alderson Broaddus University Battlers on Sunday (Oct. 29) afternoon.
The Storm swept the Battlers 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, and 25-18) for Lake Erie's eighth straight victory, tying the program record set last season.
Lake Erie opened the match with intensity as the Storm began with an 8-3 run. Crystal Kedroske (Dexter, Mich. / Dexter) had three kills early as Alderson Broaddus took their first timeout. Lake Erie stormed out of the timeout with another 9-1 run as the Storm took a 17-4 lead into a second Battlers timeout. Brooke Peiffer (Lansing, Mich. / Holt) had three kills, one solo block and a block assist as she scored five points on that run. Lake Erie pushed the lead to 15 before Hallie Zumack (Independence, Ohio / Independence) ended the first set with a service ace. The Storm took set one 25-11.
Peiffer had the Storm's first two points of the second set on kills before Alderson Broaddus tied the set at two aside. Shannon Holsinger (Roanoke, Va. / Cave Spring) had two kills as Lake Erie then went on a 8-2 run, taking a 10-4 lead over the Battlers. Following the Battlers timeout, the Storm erupted on a 9-2 run that was capped by a combined block from Peiffer and Courtney Rosebrook (Deshler, Ohio / Patrick Henry). Lake Erie led 19-6 at that point and went on to win the second set by a 25-11 final score.
Alderson Broaddus had their biggest lead of the match early in the third set as the Battlers led 5-3. Lake Erie turned the two point deficit into a five point lead with a 7-0 rally. The Storm got three kills from Peiffer while Holsinger, Peiffer and Lexi Lombardo (Olmsted Falls, Ohio / Olmsted Falls) all combined on blocks during the run. Lake Erie pushed the advantage to six but the Battlers kept trimming the lead to four. A Bethany Fisher (Orrville, Ohio / Dalton) kill gave the Storm a seven point lead late in the match. The Battlers pulled within five but Kedroske and Fisher iced the match with back-to-back kills. Lake Erie won the final set 25-18.
Peiffer led the Storm with 13 kills along with one solo block and four block assists. Kedroske finished with eight kills, two service aces and seven digs. Fisher added seven kills and a solo block. Lombardo was one of two players with six kills and also had one solo block and three block assists. Holsinger had six kills and a block assist. Zumack assisted on 19 Storm points and had one service ace. Sidney Fletcher (Saline, Mich. / Saline) led the Storm with 14 digs in the match.
The Storm will play at #23 Wheeling Jesuit on Wednesday (Nov. 1) before gearing up for the final three Great Midwest regular season matches at home.
