The Lake Erie College Storm dropped matches against Saginaw Valley and Pitt-Johnstown this afternoon with final scores of 3-1 respectively.
The Storm won the first set of the day against the Cardinals 25-21 but dropped the following three sets scoring 21 points in the second match and 13 and 15 in the third and fourth sets. Maria Blatnik had nine kills while upperclassmen Hailey Nielsen and Courtney Rosebrook both had seven. Senior libero Moe Briggs dug out 17 balls in the first match of the day.
In the second match of the day against Pitt-Johnstown, the Storm won the first set of the day as well and dropped the remaining three sets scoring 21, 18, and 20 points in the match. Senior Hailey Nielsen led the team in kills (11), while Courtney Rosebrook and Maria Blatnik both added eight. The Storm defense was a team effort in the second match. Hallie Zumack led the Storm with 11 digs, followed by Briggs and Alexandria Beccera both adding 11.
Making a statement in her first weekend of NCAA volleyball was Storm junior Carolin Santa. Santa recorded a double-double in the first match, with 10 kills and 10 digs against Saginaw Valley. Against Pitt-Johnstown, she almost recorded another one with 10 kills, nine digs, two assists, and a service ace.
The Storm looks to take home a win tomorrow in their final game of the Clarion University tournament against Davenport before heading back to Painesville. That match is set to begin at 9am.
